¿Qué no estáis escuchando ahora pero molaría?
Stuart A. Staples - Lucky Dog Recordings 03-04 (07/2005)
Debut solo album from the lead singer of the Tindersticks. This album grew out of a collection of one-off recordings Stuart did at home. Accidental piano loops, old trombone ideas, snippets of rhythms and drones, a recent purchase of an old Lowrey organ all came together with the promise of something new. After years of making beautifully crafted music with the band, he felt more than ready to appreciate the ugly and awkward. Over time each idea asked for more and gradually other players came 'round and helped them along. David Boulter played much of the organ and harmonium, Terry Edwards played the saxes, Thomas Belhom added the drums and Yann Tiersen played the piano on 'She Don't Have To Be Good To Me'. Lucky Dog/Beggars Banquet Records. 2005.
Stuart A. Staples voice is so unique, so recognisable that anything he sings on will draw comparisons to his work with the Tindersticks. His vocals are still all red wine, ashtray heartbreak and fading flock wallpaper.Yet on Lucky Dog, his first set of solo recordings, the music has been striped bare. The dense layered camber-pop of his band has been distilled down to its core. Gone are those beautiful string arrangements and sweeping rain swept dynamics. The music is constructed around minimal piano, organ, brass and guitar. The space in the songs allowing that voice room to roam.
For a lead vocalist and lyricist it's strange to open with an instrumental. Somerset House is built around Yann Tiersen's fractured piano playing. The music building like a Morton Feldman coda, as Gina Foster adds wordless vocals to the shimmering melody.
The following Marseilles Sunshine is barely there. A few precious piano notes fall on top of mournful organ chords that linger like heavy August heat. Staples singing of the moments when you feel alive, when you heart beats faster, you can feel the blood pulsing in your veins. The teasing glockenspiel is suddenly jarred by a distorted guitar line. The ghost of Talk Talk circa Laughing Stock is evoked in it mute fury, in its ebb and flow. Yes, it's that stilted, that beautiful.
The pace is upped with the brisk Say Something Now. A circling riff is repeated on a set of guitars and then a saxophone. The instruments battling against each other, the sax becoming a series of squalls, creating a corrosive feedback into which the guitars disappear. A lone cheap keyboard provides the backing on Friday Night, the patter of a preset rhythm underpinning the dolorous chord progressions. It's a bed-sit bossa nova. The sound of windswept pier in the winter, the ballroom empty but for the lost, lonely and old dancing away time in every decreasing circles.
If Ian Curtis had lived to confront the onset of middle age he may have produced something like Dark Days. Staples vocals lonely, backed by a cheap guitar that is drowning in murky reverb. It sounds like the he is on the edge of a nervous breakdown. Weary resigned and tired. 'Oh the heartache that finds me the moment I wake..'. It's as intimate as anything he has ever recorded. A 3am phone call from a desperate friend in need of comfort. Naked and wired.
After the comedown the hard won optimism. 'You sing that song, everybody sings along, so get out and breath the air , and taste the water, and count the stars..' Stuart sings on People Fall Down. I am sure he is singing to himself. He sees happiness as an escape from the confines of his band and back catalogue. A fresh start, a reinvention. He has spoken in interviews that he felt trapped inside the Tindersticks towards the end, that he was performing a role and losing his thirst for the material. People Fall Down is brighter and more dynamic that the proceeding material. The Tiger Lilies provide the drums and bass and Terry Edwards adds more wonderful Sax playing. It swaps The Tindersticks grandiosity for a more relaxed vibe. The double bass and sax conjure up images of Parisian Cafés and pitch black coffee.
A tangle of warm brass and the gentle shaking of maracas provide the backbone to She Doesn't Have To Be Good To Me. A delicate Motown meets Morrissey lament. A deep soul classic slowed to a crawl with added ennui and insight. Staples vocals exploring the hidden spaces in the song.
The album closes with the alt.country styled I've Come A Long Way. The Tindersticks have always excelled at this kind of thing so it no surprise that the final track oozes class. Chugging brass again provides the musical setting, the instrumental track gently climbing with the vocals and then half way through the guitars and percussion arrive briefly before the song slips quietly to a close. Majestic.

In an industry that likes to sacrifice quality at the altar of The New, the UK's DJ Format is reading from hip hop's Book of Common Prayer. Rather than break new ground his sound is built on the established foundations of polished block-party beats, 70s funk loops and bbq breaks. This, his second album, might well be called, If It Ain't Breakin', Why Fix It?
Innovative this ain't. Infectious, like some terrible head bobbing disease, it is.
"Participation Prerequisite" is the album's apology track. Regular Format collaborator MC Abdominal explains that practice, rather than invention, makes perfect, 'Cos it's been done I shouldn't be doing this?/that's like saying since Shakespeare wrote a play/Becket shouldn't get his say.' The thug life clearly isn't for him.
Abdominal, presumably so-called because of his warm, gut-deep voice, is joined by fellow Canadian MC D-Sisive on "3 Feet Deep" and "Separated At Birth" . They fire back and forth witty, erudite rhymes like a comedy double act advertising a dictionary. D-Sisive will rock "Even if I got a sore throat/and a cold sore/formed in the corner of both lips/making it harder to open my mouth and blurt out..." Abdominal is "flipping the intricate/like ancient origami/behind, the wake like the course of tsunami." Together they are "not just tight we're zip locked".
Jurassic 5's Chali 2na and Akil guest on "The Place". They are old friends from 1997 when DJ Format drove the bus on the group's UK tour, and they obviously share a love of hip hop's 'golden age' heritage.
There's no trail blazing here, but Format's a good craftsman and he gets the job done - making a pretty good summer record along the way. His trademark jazz loops, b-boy instrumentals, downtempo sketches and body rocking backdrops are the equivalent of a prime time Ant and Dec TV show, charming and inoffensive; if you're in you'll
watch it, but you probably wouldn't bother to set the video.

The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble - The Flip Side (2001) & Hypnotic Brass Ensemble (2005)
http://www.sendspace.com/file/7yzced
The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble seems to live up to its name. This eight-piece band of street performers, seven of whom are the sons of the Sun Ra Arkestra trumpeter Kelan Phil Cohran, recently relocated from the South Side of Chicago to Queens. The young players perform daily outdoors and underground, most often in Union Square, Times Square and Columbus Circle.
Their syncopated, often lyrical tone — incorporating jazz, funk, soul and hip-hop — is produced by horns that now look like world-worn hand-me-downs. Still, the instruments do the job, resonating off buildings blocks away.
“Our music has a special gravitational pull,” said Gabriel Hubert, 29, who plays trumpet, during a recent interview with the brothers in their Ozone Park bungalow. “People can’t walk past it. People always tell us, ‘I just had to follow that sound.’ ” Like all the band members, Mr. Hubert has a nickname or two; his are Archangel or Hudah. “The oracle” is what the brothers call their father, Mr. Cohran, still composing at 79, who was a founder of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, a collective of musicians and composers dedicated to nurturing, performing and recording original jazz and contemporary music.
Mr. Cohran has 15 sons and 7 daughters, and Hypnotic is composed of his 7 youngest sons, all very different in height, features and style. (Born from three mothers, most of the youngest brothers have taken their mother’s last name.) The only outsider is the group’s drummer, 26-year-old Christopher Anderson, a k a 360, who was hired but is now virtually part of the family.
Starting when the boys were between 3 and 5, Mr. Cohran taught them to play trumpet, tuba, drums, French horn, cornet and trombone. He would wake them at 5 a.m. for practice in their room, lined with bunk beds. First the boys were given just mouthpieces. Only when they could produce a pure sound did they graduate to the body of the instrument.
“The main thing I tried to teach them was that they have access to the universe just like everyone else,” Mr. Cohran said in a phone interview from Chicago, where he still lives.
He often painted ancient signs and symbols on the walls of their childhood home. The family logo was a double orange X. Saiph Graves, or Cid, 29, who plays trombone and speaks for the group, said that “our father is an astronomer,” and then identified his place in Orion. Some of the children are named after stars or constellations.
The ensemble is also composed of Tycho Cohran ( L. T., for lieutenant), 27, who recently traded in his dented white tuba, which he calls his “fairy tale talisman” or “museum piece,” for a new one; Amal Baji Hubert (June Body), 28, who plays trumpet; Seba Graves (Clef), 25, trombone; Dredded Jafar Baji Graves (Yoshi), 26, trumpet; and Tarik Graves (Smoove), 22, trumpet.
The band, which supports itself with its music, has played on the streets of numerous American cities, and plans a European tour this fall. It has three independently produced albums, “The Flip Side” (2001), “Hypnotic Brass Ensemble” (2005) and the recently completed “Pay Up.”
The creation of Hypnotic in 1999, after a stint as a hip-hop group called the Wolf Pack, represented the sons’ return to their instruments and one another after teenage rebellions, including quitting music for a period of time, against their father’s stern principles.
“As the sons, as the legitimate heirs, we’re coming out here to reclaim the sound,” Saiph said.

R.L. Burnside is a god among fans of dirty Delta Blues. His music makes you wanna get up and move, and if you don't, your listening to the wrong music. One of my favorite tracks has to be "Rollin' & Tumblin'," which is the base song of the remix "It's Bad You Know" from the album "Come on In." You can't help but smile when you listen to the fast paced and loud "Snake Drive" as his entire band goes to town. He is undoubtedly one of the best artists under Fat Possum Records (or anywhere for that matter), just about every album of his kicks out that nitty-gritty Delta vibe, but this one of Burnside's albums that does it the best. His soulful music is what real blues fans should be looking for.
