DEP, el hombre que tuvo la visión de convertir a las publicaciones de la Marvel/Atlas en un universo de ficción inventando la continuidad en los cómics, el hombre que con un par de "bocadillos" definía a un personaje de forma inequívoca, y sobre todo el hombre que supo ordenar y dar sentido a las desbordantes ideas de los genios Steve Ditko y Jack Kirby para producir algunas de las mejores historias populares de todos los tiempos.

I think it's safe to say that without Stan comics may not have survived the 60s or 70s. Comic sales were falling. Most comics were still aimed at a very young 7-12 year old audience, and all of us Baby Boomers were getting to the age where we very well might have stop reading comics altogether. But Stan, along with Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko and all the others, aimed their books at an older audience, allowing us to to keep reading comics into our teens, 20s and beyond.

And beyond the stories, Stan's Bullpen Bulletins and letter columns spoke to us directly, making us feel we were part of something big and fun and... definitely nothing to ever being ashamed about. He treated his letter columns as if he was speaking to his peers. We weren't in any way, but the power of his wonderfully crafted enthusiasm made us all part of his exclusive club. And we were so happy to be even a small part of that.

Stan always said he handled Marvel like it was an advertising campaign. And it worked. It worked more than any of us knew. Baby Boomers not only stuck with Marvel and DC, but as Stan's target audience grew older, we took the visions Stan and the others created and turned them into today's TV and movie empires. Characters that once only the most diehard comic fan ever heard of were now known across the world. Ant Man? Guardians? C'mon.

I had a chance to work directly with Stan and I always found him to be a great boss and someone who encouraged his people not to copy his style but to find our own voice.

There is so much I could say about Stan - all positive by the way - but for now let me just say thank you, Stan, for making me continue to love comics and pretty much everything that has happened to me since.

The last few years have been tough for Stan. So you defintely deserve to Rest In Peace, now and forever.

I'm sadder than I can say that Stan has died... even though I know, from my recent phone conversations with him, that he was more than ready to leave this Earth. I'm so grateful that, by sheer circumstance, I got to spend a half hour or so with him this past Saturday, less than 48 hours before he passed away. At that time, it was obvious that he lacked much
of the old Stan Lee energy that everybody had got to know at conventions and in movie cameos, but when I asked him about future cameos, he expressed a real interest in making them, if he could find a way to do it without their being too much trouble. He asked me about Dann and all the animals on our place (Dann had, at his request, sent him a DVD we made for him a couple of years ago), and got fairly animated when talking about his battles with publisher Martin Goodman over doing Spider-Man. I opined as how maybe the one important creative decision Goodman ever made was when he commissioned Stan to create a super-hero group back in 1961. Stan seemed to get a kick out of that. He posed for a couple of pictures with me, and then the last one with me and my friend and manager John Cimino, who had worked (in concert with Stan's buddy and handler Jon Bolerjack) to arrange for Stan and me to get together one more time. But I wish I could look forward to seeing him and sparring around with him again. Still, I consider myself so very lucky to have known and worked with him for so many years... one of the most important mythmakers of the 20th
century.

He was a controversial figure, yes. I credit him with more of the creation of Marvel Comics than some others do, less than others, but I stand by what I have long said: that if not for Stan, there was a strong chance that comic books--solely and exclusively for children before Stan and Jack Kirby came along--might very well have followed the path of drive-in theaters and automats, obsolete relics that no longer speak to who we are and what we crave. His collaborators brought their share, but it was Stan the showman who went out and recruited a whole new audience of teens and college kids. It was Stan who let the world know that comics were still vital and relevant in an era where other publishers were ashamed to talk about what they did for a living. It was Stan whose bombast turned Marvel Comics from a second-place publishing company into the cultural phenomenon it became.

I had several meals and legitimate, no-showmanship conversations with Stan over the past 15 years or so. When I was at Boom! Studios working with him on a new line of books, I admit that I fully expected him to be disinterested and--let's say "light in oversight." Instead, he rolled up his sleeves and got into the creative process. He wasn't there just to sell us his name; he had suggestions, offered improvements, and--my hand to God--threw out little bits of wisdom that seemed obvious but were framed in a way that made me rethink the way I approached storytelling.

The best day, the very best day I ever had with Stan, had to do with one of these projects. He didn't like one of the issues and said, 48 hours to press, that he couldn't put his name on it. I asked him to give me two days to rip up the floorboards and fix it all. I moved panels around, moved pages around, had art changed and redrawn, and rewrote heavily with the blessing of the writer, When I brought it back to him, nervous and skating on the edge of catastrophe, he sat down beside me on his couch, read it page by page, put it down, and said to me, "That's one of the best editing jobs I've ever seen." That moment goes in the highlight reel when I die.

And then. And THEN.

Then, with his face-front-true-believers facade dropped, just being real and heartfelt and sincere, Stan started talking about what it was like working with his Spider-Man partner, Steve Ditko. How great Ditko was from the start but how much, and specifically in what ways, Stan saw him improve over the years. He dissected for me in detail how Ditko approached storytelling, and I wish to God I could remember chapter and verse because no Stan interview or retrospective had ever covered any of this before. What I mostly recall is simply the complete and total sincerity with which he shared the anecdotes, in a voice I'd never heard from him before or since.

Thank you, Stan. You had no idea how much you'll be missed.

Stan Lee has caught the last web out. A lot will be said about him, and there's no way to summarize his contributions to comics here so I'll settle for saying that he's one of the three maybe four, contributors to the field, who fired my interest in writing and drawing stories for mainstream American comics. Haven't regretted that decision for a second. Well, maybe once or twice late at night on blown deadlines. :-) Thanks for everything, Stan. A pleasure to have known you; a trip to have been able to work with you. Godspeed, pal.

Stan Lee creó el método Marvel, que sería algo así como "hey Jack, el hombre topo ataca Manhattan, los 4F le derrotan sólo para descubrir en la última página que es el Dr Muerte quien está detrás", luego Kirby dibujaba mas o menos lo que le salía de la polla con estas indicaciones, y finalmente Stan escribía los dialogos mas o menos cuadrando lo que realmente él quería contar amoldandose a los flipes de Kirby.

Era así y Stan Lee jamas lo negó ni dijo que Spiderman o la Cosa fueran creaciones suyas.

Todos sabíamos que este día iba a llegar más pronto que tarde, pero aun así no he podido evitar la llorera cuando me he enterado esta tarde. Lo que este hombre ha hecho por la cultura popular, esto es, por todos nosotros, solo es comparable a lo que nos dieron los Beatles o Walt Disney.

El gran charlatán de feria, el que con su verborrea imparable hacía que un monstruo de piedra naranja fuera más carismático que un guaperas flamígero. El que consiguió que un adolescente escuchimizado y empollon se convirtiera en el superhéroe más querido. Quien juntó a Los Heroes Más Poderosos de La Tierra. Quien hizo que todos nos sintieramos alguna vez odiados y temidos por un mundo que juramos proteger. Y quien consiguió que todo eso fuera mucho más que una serie de musculitos en pijamas chillones.

Justo hace unos días pensaba que es otro de esos que parece que no va a fallecer nunca, pero que ya con 95 años cualquier día llegaría la noticia. Que pena . D.E.P

Cuando a veces nos perdemos en discusiones sobre la personalidad de unos dibujos de colores, es cuando nos damos cuenta de la grandeza del universo que cocreó este hombre.

Tiene narices que Ditko y Lee hayan fallecido el mismo año.

En efecto, parecía que iba a durar siempre. Deja tras de sí un legado increible. Le echaré de menos en los cameos de las pelis pero sus comics siguen ahí. RIP maestro.
