Otro pedazo disco del sr. Powell , no me llega tanto como Atlantis pero casi, más que nada por el efecto sorpresa-descubrimiento de aquel pero Life and Death es una maravilla, cuanto más lo escucho más me pide el cuerpo ponerlo. Las guitarras por momentos escupen fuego de los Bafles. TREMENDO

En Teenage Head Music tenemos malas noticias. Nos hemos visto obligados a cancelar el tour de Leroy Powell.
El señor Powell está dedicando su tiempo a un "reality show" para la televisión estadounidense y no podrá honrarnos con su presencia en los shows que tenía programados en Europa.
Pedimos perdón a todos los fans de Leroy Powell que estaban deseando acudir a todos sus conciertos y a todos los promotores que han invertido tiempo y esfuerzo en promocionar sus shows.

Este tipo nunca falla

Una de las anonimas discografías más consistentes de los últimos tiempos

First, and to be honest and upfront - I know next to nothing about this guy, there's precious little online and the only work I've heard before, and then without knowing who was doing the sterling riffing, is with Shooter Jennings (who I recall also went space-wide with a cosmic concept album some time back...) - so it stands to reason that if you like Shooter you'll be fine here; but there's a whole lot more than country to be chomped through on this album -

The cover will either draw you in or drive you off - personally I love it - looks like Clyde's boy from "Any Which Way...", all growed up and flying the cosmos, taking out the trash and naming names - very, and way cool.

"Weightlessness" - sets the tone with acoustic guitar, a synth sounding something like an electric jews harp, and a voice that crackles somewhere between c.b. radio and Major Tom - not a bad start, but it all gets real good, real soon

"Time Flies" is awesome - proper seventies rock, a bit of Who's Next - that "I'm hitting middle age and am angsty" bite in both the music and lyrics, in amongst this, dare I say Kansas-like tune. It's also got a massive chorus and an organ/guitar midsection that kills - should be a single - top 10 easy - that is, in a proper world where this would be everywhere and I would be reviewer 700 and something.

"King Kong" - like Blue Oyster cult jamming with Faith no More - and as good as that sounds!

"Overlords..." - does go on a bit to be honest, but keeps the time/space theme going; and now I listen again, the vocals are good and gritty, and wouldn't be out of place on Baroness's last disk - it's also reminding me a bit Diamond Dogs era Bowie, which is never bad; and more Blue Oyster Cult - not my favourite track on the record to be fair, but still pretty out there on a country record - and country needs to get out there a whole heck more often.

"Rising" - much more like it for me - some Seger, and more Seger is all that will save humanity in my humbly 100% accurate opinion - bit of "Her Strut" to the groove, bit of "Turn the Page" in it's DNA - some metal in it's riffs too. The lyrics are post-apocalyptic, kiss the sky and get out of here type of thing, in fact a nice twist because my rock-addled brain was expecting a road-dogs lament about hitting the open road - the whole "Freebird" rip; and it is that, except here the road goes on, literally forever - so good twist and a rockin' song.

"Brave New World" - good instrumental tune - think Daft Punk does Country.

"Lost In the Future" - grand eighties metal - who doesn't love this stuff - only wrong people, that's who - some Kansas again - plus Blue Oyster Cult - these guys should really meet... tour and record together and save humanity from dull rock and crap country - synthesise to survive brothers and sisters.

"Liz" - my favourite song here - starts like Baroness and countless other cosmic metal seventies rock addicts that are out there if you seek - and that is a recommendation by the way - but then the song is balanced by a sweet chorus that is still metallic, yet has a Flaming Lips quality - so a metallic countrydelica is what you get here - some moogy sounds (sorry not a musician!!!) underpin the whole and overall it's just a blast.

"Brainscan" Pink Floyd Darksidey, with slide guitar - makes sense in the context

"Star" - more Roger Waters in the lyrics, but with lovely finger picked backing and that organ/moog??? again - this is the most "cosmic" country song , in the Gene Clark of "No Other" sense.

"Death Machine" - like Neil Diamond singing a slowed down doom-metal ballad - just as awesome as that sounds.

"Checking Out" - Gene Clark again - and some Eagles in the chorus - a fitting end to a bizarre and truly wondrous "country" album. Maybe some Jimmy Webb in the scope and feel too.

This gets five stars for not being dull, for having a space monkey on the cover ( and come to think of it, there's a bit of Buck Dharma (via Planet of the Apes of course!!!) about that cover dude too); it gets the maximum for daring to show that songs that paint outside the lines of dumb genres need to be celebrated and played really, really loud over any system where the tired old and the lazy young still allow s*** to be bright enough to sing for their hearts - and any record that sounds like Leon Russell making a metal album has to be worth a listen - you might be disappointed if you buy this, it ain't perfect I'll admit, but it will keep your belief in crazy-assed bearded folk making big, cosmic music for no real reason, but that it sounds like a good idea at the time and that is a damned good thing.

So instead of reaching for Darkside the next time you want to bliss out on the big headphones (i know you got them if you like the look of this record), give this a spin and be good and glad there are still out there people out there making stuff like this.
