Robert Plant and Eric Clapton to Perform at Bert Jansch Tribute Concert

Robert Plant and Eric Clapton are two of the stars who will perform at a tribute concert for Bert Jansch, guitarist for the influential British folk-rock band Pentangle who died in 2011. The show will take place at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Dec. 3.

‘A Celebration of Bert Jansch’ is a benefit for the foundation set up on Nov. 3, 2013, which would have been his 70th birthday. The organization aims to “sustain the creativity associated with Bert Jansch and his music by helping in the education and promotion of future generations of acoustic musicians.” This will be accomplished through scholarships and workshops that focus on Jansch’s 40-year career.

According to Uncut, the Royal Festival Hall was a natural choice for the concert. It was the site of both Pentangle’s first major performance in 1967 and Jansch’s last-ever concert in August 2011, two months before his death. The band also recorded the live half of their 1968 double album ‘Sweet Child’ there.

Among the other well-known names on the bill include Donovan, Roy Harper and Martin Carthy. Three of his Pentangle bandmates, Terry Cox, Jacqui McShee, Danny Thompson, will also perform. The concert will be recorded, with highlights shown on British television on an undisclosed date in early 2014.

A partir de sus influencias (el bluesman Big Bill Broonzy, los maestros del folk escocés Jimmy Shand y Archie Fisher, el virtuoso del finger picking Davy Graham), el guitarrista Bert Jansch confeccionó un estilo singular que fue muy influyente. En su tercer álbum en solitario, Jack Orion, Jansch - de veces acompañado por su colega de Pentangle John Renbourn - había decidido emprender una renovación del repertorio tradicional que iba a confrontar con su hechicera virtuosidad instrumental y su voz áspera. Cuando grabó ese disco a principios del verano de 1966, ya hacía un tiempo que había dejado atrás la comunidad folk de Edinburgo para imponerse en los clubes londinenses junto a Ralph McTell. Aunque estuviera en la cumbre de su carrera y en plena posesión de sus capacidades técnicas, Jansch intentó experiencias extrañas, primitivas y arcaicas que le dieron al disco un aspecto onírico intrigante.

Sus coetáneos lo vieron claro. Nick Drake versionó dos de sus canciones que años más tarde aparecerían en la recopilación The Complete Home Recordings. Bob Dylan fue influenciado por su versión de Nottamum Town cuyas resonancias se pueden oír en Masters of War. Pero los que más se inspiraron de Jansch - al que se referían como "el Jimi Hendrix de la guitarra acústica" - fueron Neil Young y Jimmy Page. El primero se acordó de su Needle of Death - según Young una de las canciones más bellas sobre la droga - para componer su Ambulance Blues (álbum On the Beach). En cuanto al segundo, copió literalmente Black Water Side para hacer Black Mountain Side en el primer álbum de Led Zeppelin. También se encontrarían rastros de The Wagonner's Lad (otra canción de Jack Orion) en Bron-Y-Aur Stomp. Jimmy Page era fan de Pentangle donde tocaban Jansch y John Renbourn. De hecho, copió a este último para hacer Nobody's Fault But Mine. Esto muestra la fascinación que ejerció el British Folk Revival sobre Led Zeppelin, un aspecto que se tiende a olvidar.
