Woodstock, in heart and spirit
WOODSTOCK — He's the guy folks around town saw pumping gas or in the store, or doing fundraisers for the local fire or police department or school, or playing in the town square. Yes, he's a music icon, a multiple Grammy-winning Rock and Roll Hall-of-Famer even. And pilgrims do come from far away to see him. But here, he's a neighbor first, a familiar face.
"He's just a regular person," 60-year-old Karen Outwater said.
He was born in Arkansas, but this is Levon Helm's home. And on Wednesday, his neighbors were saddened with the news that cancer seemed poised to take the 71-year-old former frontman of The Band.
"Levon is in the final stages of his battle with cancer," his wife, Sandy, and daughter Amy wrote on Helm's official website and Facebook page. "Please send your prayers and love to him as he makes his way through this part of his journey.
"Thank you fans and music lovers who have made his life so filled with joy and celebration ... he has loved nothing more than to play, to fill the room up with music, lay down the backbeat, and make the people dance! He did it every time he took the stage."
In many ways, Helm is representative of this Ulster County town long known for its bohemian heritage.
But a celebrity? You know, someone above everyone else? "Levon?" Bobbi Trowbridge, who has lived 66 of her 70 years here, asks in bewilderment. "Not Levon."
Woodstock, a town of roughly 5,900, is common destination for day tourists, including musicians. Some made the trek to see Band members such as Helm and the late Rick Danko perform locally. "There is a whole age of people who worshipped them, especially musicians," said 51-year-old Michael Pollack, a local resident who worked as a road manager for The Band in the late 1980s. But the locals did not view the musicians as rock deities.
"Levon is just a person — a very cool person," Pollack said.
In recent years, Helm's "Midnight Ramble" concerts in his barn brought in recording legends from across the music world (and out-of-town patrons at $150 a pop). But you could also see Helm playing all over town through the years, especially if it was a benefit for a good cause.
"Levon worked hard — not in a selfish way, not in a self-promotional way — for agendas that were important to the town," said another local who looms large in music history, John Sebastian, a solo artist and former leader of the Lovin' Spoonful. "He really has been a contributor in a neighborly way — and that is why he is treated that way."
The Band's presence here, Bob Dylan, the Big Pink (the house where they recorded and wrote) and all the other artists who have come and gone over the years will remain part of the town's lore. Of course, there's the name, forever linked with the concert held 60 miles away: The legendary 1969 concert was initially slated to be held in this vicinity before being moved.
There was once a T-shirt making the rounds here that showed a map of New York: "You are here," it read, with an arrow pointing to Woodstock. "The concert was held here," with another arrow pointing toward Bethel. Didn't matter. Woodstock, as in this place, was the home of classic rock, the home of '60s rock, the home of neighbor Levon Helm.
"We are going to have to re-imagine it a little bit without him," Sebastian said.
In many ways, Levon Helm, artist and neighbor, came to represent the ethos of Woodstock on display in the bars and the shops and long musical jams in the barn.
"Woodstock is on the edge of reality," said the 65-year-old Erik Holmlin, who has been here 27 years and runs the store Dharmaware. "Levon is a big part of it. And his legacy will live on.
"I'm sure the next generation will take over."

aún recuerdo la impresión que me causó la primera vez que vi el último vals, el momento en el que aparece levon a la batería cantando eso de "heartaches and miseries, you've been causing me, and i've been trying to do my best, you know i try to do my best, don't do it, don't you break my heart"...
gracias, levon, por todos los grandes momentos que nos has hecho pasar... el recuerdo del concierto que vi hace 2 años se viene conmigo a la tumba...

Lucinda Williams, Mike Gordon, Jim James remember Levon
We reached out to celebrities and musicians across the world for their reactions to the news of Levon Helm's fading health and, ultimately, his death Thursday.
Here's what we've received. More responses to come.
Compiled by Lindsay Suchow
Lucinda Williams
Lucinda Williams is one of the leading Americana artists, a songwriter and singer of country, folk and rock. She reflected on losing Levon Thursday night:
A little over a year ago, Levon Helm invited me to open two shows for him in Toronto.
Well aware of my Louisiana heritage, he enthusiastically let it be known that he and his band had worked up a version of "Crescent City" and asked if I would sing that song with them and also sit in on "Evangeline." I'll never forget Levon's ear-to-ear grin as we played those songs. The short time I spent with him over those two nights left a deep and lasting impression on me.
I heard the sad news today and I am in tears as I write this. I lost a hero and a friend. His music inspired and influenced me during my early years and still does, to this day. And now that I've been honored to have spent some time with Levon, I have to say that I will always remember him with a twinkle in his eyes, a smile as warm and friendly as his native Arkansas land and an endearing and infectious spirit that will live on forever.
Thank you for your musical lessons, Levon. Rave on, brother.
Phish
Mike Gordon, bassist of Phish, sent us this reflection about Levon after the icon's death Thursday.
Of course The Band was a huge influence on Phish and many other bands. But Levon's own musical career is just so inspiring ... from wanting to leave the Bob Dylan scene in the '60s despite all the success around it in order to follow his own musical tastes to the incredible Midnight Rambles of recent years.
I was lucky enough to go to four of the Rambles, and play at one, and these were life changing experiences. Jon Fishman called home from the parking lot after the first one I went to, saying it was a top musical experience of his life. I've always thought music can exist so perfectly when churning in the confines of a barn, and this took it to an extreme where American culture was simply bubbling over with authenticity, passion and a connection to the backwoods and the hills. It's a testament that 10 or 15 incredible (and notable) musicians came through to make up and enhance this house band (not to mention the incredible opening bands).
In the middle of the barn, with his deep 70-year-old smile, Levon's uniquely spare yet fierce drumming propelled a repertoire through these enchanted nights. Folk, bluegrass, and country blended effortlessly with blues, soul, and funk, creating a melting pot of sounds unique to our country. And despite battles with throat cancer, Levon would grab the mic and sing so powerfully that it shook the beams of his old barn-home to the core. To do a few cool things when someone's young is one thing, but then to grow older and cultivate such a heartfelt and moving musical situation is very inspiring. It's no wonder so many artists are inspired by his sound, his sensibility, and his projects with their own pursuits.
This is a huge loss, and I'm sorry for anyone who couldn't experience that magic first hand, and I'm thankful that our country and our musical community was lucky enough to be graced by such a soul.
My Morning Jacket
Jim James, lead singer of rockers My Morning Jacket, shared his thoughts about Levon Helm before his passing:
"It is so crazy when real dreams actually come true ... but that's what happened to me getting to play music live onstage with one of my all-time heroes: Mr. Levon Helm.
"Levon kindly welcomed us into his studio and home a few years back when we recorded a song for a tribute record to The Band, and we enjoyed watching a Ramble there as well. I'll never forget hearing his voice in person for the first time - a very moving experience. Since then I have been blessed to share the stage with Levon several times, as well as getting to perform with My Morning Jacket at a home Ramble in 2010, after which Levon invited us into his kitchen to enjoy one of his beloved bottled Cokes and some great conversation - in his beautifully down-to-earth way.
"I do not say this lightly: Getting to sing 'It Makes No Difference' in Levon Helm's home, and to look over and see Levon behind the drum kit laying it down, was one of the most profoundly moving experiences of my entire life. Levon's unique rhythmic style, combined with his beautifully universal yet otherworldly voice, have greatly influenced myself and damn near every other musician I have ever met.
"Ask anyone around: Levon is the man."
Patrick Hallahan, drummer of My Morning Jacket, on Helm:
"I am very much in debt to Levon the immeasurable inspiration he's given me throughout the years."
Kris Kristofferson
Kris Kristofferson, the iconic songwriter and performer, took a moment to recall his friend Levon.
Levon is one of the best people I've known in my life - both as an artist and as a human being. He's my favorite singer and drummer of all time. God bless him, Sandy and Amy, it will be a sadder world without him.
Jackie Greene
Jackie Greene, a songwriter who has shared the stage with Helm, spoke about him as his health was worsening.
I'm deeply saddened to learn of Levon's worsening condition. I had the immense good fortune of doing many shows with him both on the road and at the Ramble. I can honestly say those were some of the best times I've ever had.
Levon is an icon and a true legend. He's been a musical hero of mine for as long as I can remember and will continue to be. The first time I met him, he was warm and welcoming. He shook my hand and offered me a soda pop. It was if I'd known him for years. I'll never forget that.
His contribution to the Great American Songbook is immeasurable. He is literally one of the purest and most honorable musicians I've ever encountered. He is 100 precent Americana and embodies everything that's great about American music. He is a great treasure and his legacy will continue to live in our hearts and souls.
My thoughts prayers are with him and his family at this time.
Counting Crows
Jim Bogios, drummer of the Counting Crows, shared his thoughts about Helm as the legend's health declined:
Levon Helm was the best singing drummer in the world, period. He inspired me at a very young age to sing while playing drums. The thing about Levon was that when he sang and played drums at the same time, neither suffered one bit. This is not an easy thing to do. He was such a soulful musician and person, with an unbelievable feel and musicality.
In my early days of playing drums with Sheryl Crow, I had the unlikely pleasure to play with Levon. He was very complimentary and encouraging. We were playing a few songs together for a TV show. It was Levon, Sheryl, James Taylor and Steve Winwood. Levon was happy for me to play drums while he was on mandolin. I have nothing against James Taylor, but the whole time while rehearsing, he kept trying to get Levon behind the drums. Levon wasn't having it, but Taylor just wouldn't let it go. Finally, in front of everyone Levon said, "I think my man Jim has it well taken care of back there." Discussion over! Needless to say this made quite an impact on me as a young drummer. Getting the thumbs up from one of my heroes made an impact from that day forward.
I always think about "The Last Waltz." You watch that movie with all these legendary players, and the one person that stands out is Levon Helm. He was a star amongst the stars!
