Roadburn 2017: A Coven, a comeback, a curator and more

COVEN to play their first show in almost three decades - and first ever European show

2017 Artist in Residence, GNOD, will perform four sets over the course of the event.

ROADBURN FESTIVAL is proud to announce the first set of artists for Roadburn 2017. The 22nd edition of Roadburn Festival will take place April 20-23, 2017 at the 013 Venue, Tilburg, The Netherlands.

Influential occult rock pioneers, COVEN, will unite for the first time ever on European soil to perform at Roadburn 2017. Led by the iconic Jinx Dawson, COVEN will cast a spell over the 013 on Thursday, 20 April 2017. Having inspired everyone from Ghost to The Devil’s Blood, from Witchcraft to In Solitude, from Blood Ceremony to Lucifer, and indeed, even our festival, this once in a life time event is Roadburn's way of honouring a band that have cast such a shadow over our musical history.

Jinx Dawson commented: "Roadburn Festival's intrepid ring master, Walter, hath stirred us from our Coven lair. We shall be performing a musickal ritual for the first time in many ages.We are wickedly delighted to travel to the Netherlands for this very special festival concert, and to bring our musickal form of Witchcraft once again to the live stage.”

JOHN DYER BAIZLEY is no stranger to Roadburn Festival, and we are delighted to announce that he will be the 2017 festival curator. He will leave his mark on the main stage on Friday, April 21 and at Het Patronaat on Saturday, April 22 - hand picking the bands that have had an impact on him, and presenting them to Roadburn attendees.

John said: "It is such a high honor to have even been considered for the role; I feel genuinely privileged to have fostered so many wonderful relationships within the microcosmic-world that surrounds this incredibly unique festival. Without revealing anything too specific concerning the lineup, I can confidently say that the groundwork that Walter and I have laid in the preceding months is staggering, both in it’s scope and it’s diversity. I could never have dreamed that I’d get to communicate with, let alone invite and present so many incredible bands during this one consolidated musical event. I am proud to have the opportunity to showcase so many of those artists, who have had an indelible impact on my own work, so many esteemed friends and tour-mates, and people/ bands with whom so many in our community share fundamental creative ideals."

As part of his curation, John's own band, BARONESS, will take to the main stage on the Friday of Roadburn. By the time they first appeared at Roadburn in 2009, the band had already picked up multiple ‘album of the year’ accolades and made quite the impression on the live circuit, as a non-stop touring band. Having since then gone from strength to strength, BARONESS closed out 2015 by releasing Purple - the first album to be put out via their own label, Abraxan Hymns. We at Roadburn are thrilled to host the band once more, and overjoyed that this will be part of JOHN DYER BAIZLEY’s curation.

WARNING disbanded shortly after the release of their highly regarded second album, Watching from a Distance in 2006. Roadburn is thrilled to announce that Patrick Walker has reunited the band to perform their seminal album in full at Roadburn next April. He commented: "I am humbled that there is still an interest in Watching from a Distance all these years on, and I’m going to be very moved to be able to play it for an audience at Roadburn 2017.”

Each year, Roadburn Festival selects an Artist In Residence to perform multiple times over the course of the weekend. Following in the footsteps of Misþyrming, The Heads and Neige, this year, GNOD will bring their own brand of eclectic lunacy to Roadburn. Performing four times in different guises (including a collaboration with Radar Men from the Moon), the full scope of GNOD's psychedelic capabilities will be be explored in full at Roadburn 2017.

ZEAL & ARDOR have caused considerable ripples of excitement throughout the music scene this year, and Roadburn is delighted to confirm that ZEAL & ARDOR will be launching themselves into the live arena for the first time, bringing their unrivalled, unclassifiable fusion to Roadburn Festival.

Elsewhere on the bill, we will be inviting SCHAMMASCH to perform their incredible album Triangle, in full, at Het Patronaat, on Friday, April 21; PERTURBATOR will dazzle the Roadburn audience with an intense set of tripped out electronics; LES DISCRETS will be returning to Roadburn and showcasing material from upcoming album Prédateurs; ex-Agalloch mastermind John Haughm will present his new band, PILLORIAN; and last but not least ORANSSI PAZUZU will return to Roadburn for the second year in a row - this time with they will take to the main stage to give everybody a chance to revel in their sonic experimentation.
Tickets for Roadburn 2017 will go on sale from Thursday, 20 October 2016. They will be available to purchase in person from the 013 venue, Tilburg, The Netherlands from 6.30pm local time - and ticket buyers are invited to the pre-sale party at the venue featuring Ortega and Gomer Pyle. Tickets will go on general sale at 9pm (NL and mainland Europe)/ 8pm (UK)/ 3pm (East Coast USA)/ 12 noon (West Coast USA). Yo he ido a la edición de este año por primera vez y realmente supero mis expectativas.

Es un festival hecho por amantes de la música para amantes de la música. Claro, hay un poco de snobismo, pero siempre lo habrá en este tipo de eventos.

Lo único malo es que algunas salas son muy pequeñas y eso hace que te pierdas varios shows. Pero mas alla de esto, es un festival para ir aunque sea una vez.

Particularmente al Hellfest iria todos los años sin siquiera ver el cartel. Al Roadburn esperaria hasta los ultimos anuncios, pero el cartel siempre esta a la altura.

Todos los años hay un músico o banda que además de actuar elige los grupos de uno de los días del festival en el main stage

Yo también me estrené este año. Experiencia cojonuda que espero repetir este año.

También me jodió perderme a bandas por no poder entrar en las salas.

De momento no es que me mate el cartel pero ya hay cositas que apetecen como Oranssi pazuzu, que me los perdí el año pasado, la escisión de agalloch, zeal años ardor...

To no me perdí nada de lo que quería ver. Cuestión de prioridades e ir con tiempo a las salas pequeñas. Me parece de manera indudable el mejor festival indoor del mundo en el que haya estado. 013 poppodium es LA SALA.

Yo también tengo ganas de ir algún año, la verdad...debe ser un festi muy excitante, perfecto para disfrutar de la música a otro nivel. Pero las fechas son malas para mí, casi imposibles por trabajo!
Mi hermano ha estado en 3 ediciones creo, y siempre me está intentando convencer. Muy auténtico, y además en Holanda!
Habrá que catar algún año....
