Ponche de Leche (Chile)

1 taza de leche.
1 pedazo de canela en rama.
1 pedazo de cáscara de limón.
1/8 cucharadita de sal.
1 yema de huevo.
1 cucharadita de sal (a gusto).
2 cucharadas de ron o aguardiente.
Preparación

Hierva la leche con la canela, la cáscara de limón y la sal. Déjela refrescar.

Bata la yema de huevo con el azúcar; añádale la leche y vuélvalo a poner en el fuego hasta que se caliente.

Al momento de servirlo, agregue el aguardiente o ron.

Mark Lanegan y el debut de Gutter Twins: "Siempre quise venir a Sudamérica"


"Saturnalia" era la gran fiesta de los romanos. La que se celebraba cada 17 de diciembre para honrar al dios Saturno y la que motivaba el mayor desmadre en la ciudad. Los libros hablan de la fecha en que "los esclavos eran patrones y los patrones eran esclavos" y la cavernosa voz de Mark Lanegan (44), al teléfono desde un hotel de Sao Paulo, teoriza con ese "cambio de roles" que también inspiró el primer disco de The Gutter Twins llamado, precisamente, Saturnalia (2008): "La gente se volvía loca, es cierto, pero en este caso creo que es más bien así: Yo soy el patrón y Greg el esclavo. Lo que pasa es que yo le hago creer que es al revés".

Es mañana de martes y el ex Screaming Trees (banda contemporánea a Nirvana y Pearl Jam y considerada una de las mejores de esa camada de Seattle) ha dormido poco. Lleva menos de un día en Sudamérica y parte contando que alguna vez estuvo a punto de venir con su banda, pero como muchas otros planes frustrados con ese grupo "las cosas no salieron como queríamos". El tipo es parco, pero nada descortés. Contrario a su fama de implacable, el hombre que alcanzó categoría "de culto" por participar en proyectos como Queens of the Stone Age y Soulsavers -y sostener a la par una aplaudida carrera solista- admite que "siempre quise venir". "Tú sabes, muchos amigos me contaban de Sudamérica, de Brasil, de Chile y claro que daban ganas de venir. A ver qué tan grande era la cosa. Qué tan cierto es toda esta fantasía con Sudamérica".

Gutter Twins, cuya traducción más sensata sería algo así como los "gemelos de la acequia", fue un proyecto negociado por años. Desde 2003 que estos dos cantantes, considerados dos sobrevivientes de la mejor música de los 90, venían dándole vuelta a la idea de hacer algo juntos, pero recién en 2008 cruzaron armas y lanzaron un primer disco que estuvo entre los mejores criticados de la temporada. Saturnalia sonaba eléctrico y con aire gótico, pero el directo en Chile será acústico y con más citas: "No te preocupes, que será acústico, pero de todas formas rockero. Porque es lo que somos. ¿Sabes? Eso es lo que necesito", cuenta Lanegan. "Cuando me proponen hacer algo, tengo que estar conectado con la música. Si no tengo ese presentimiento de que algo bueno va a salir, no me interesa. Simplemente, no lo hago".

Habla Mark Lanegan

Antes de sus shows porteños junto con Greg Dulli al frente de The Gutter Twins, el ex Screaming Trees conversó con RS.

Alguna vez, cuando el grunge estaba en su apogeo y Kurt Cobain no había resuelto ponerle punto final a su propia historia, Mark Lanegan militaba en The Screaming Trees, una banda que formaba parte del movimiento con epicentro en Seattle. Como viejos conocidos que eran, Lanegan, Cobain y su compañero de Nirvana Chris Novoselic se juntaron para despuntar el vicio y darle forma a un EP de blues. Grabaron "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?", de Leadbelly, pero el proyecto no prosperó. Lanegan lo incluyó en su debut como solista (The Winding Sheet, 1990) y, años más tarde, Nirvana dejó su propia relectura del tema para el cierre de su MTV Unplugged. "Lo recuerdo como una muy buena persona, siempre con el corazón abierto. Todavía lo extraño mucho", dice Lanegan al otro lado de la línea telefónica. Al repasar los Diarios de Cobain, queda claro que el respeto y el afecto eran mutuos.

Lo cierto es que, desde entonces, mucha agua ha corrido bajo el punte. Y Lanegan llega por primera vez al país para presentarse el 7 de julio en La Trastienda con The Gutter Twins, el dúo que comparte con Greg Dulli, otro veterano de la escena "alternativa" de los 90 al frente de los Afghan Whigs. ¿Podemos verlos como dos íconos undergrunge? "Somos nada más que dos tipos que vienen haciendo música desde hace bastante tiempo y todavía siguen haciéndolo. Pero no está en nosotros cómo nos puede ver la gente", se desmarca. Aunque se conocían desde mucho antes, el origen de la dupla habría que rastrearlo en su aporte en Blackberry Bell (2003) de The Twilight Singers, el nuevo grupo de Dulli; un año más tarde éste participó en Bubblegum, de Lanegan, y lo acompañó en teclados durante la gira. "Somos buenos amigos y a veces nos juntábamos para escribir canciones. Al principio, el proyecto no era para nada serio. Pero, eventualmente, nos dimos cuenta que había material como para un disco y quisimos terminarlo. Eso fue lo que hicimos en Saturnalia", describe.

¿Cómo suena The Gutter Twins en vivo?

El show que vamos a llevar a la Argentina es acústico. Somos Greg, yo y otro guitarrista. Vamos a tocar canciones de Saturnalia, pero también otras de mis álbumes solistas, de los Screaming Trees, de los Twilight Singers y algunos covers. Y también canciones nuevas, inéditas. Para nosotros es todo un desafío tocar de esta manera, sin una banda de rock a nuestras espaldas. Va a ser una noche de desafíos.


¿El desafío pasa por tocar con menos electricidad?

Ese es uno de los desafíos. El otro es que, cuando tocás en este plan, el público está realmente cerca tuyo (se ríe). Es una performance distinta a lo habitual, mucho más. íntima.

Alguien describió a Saturnalia como un álbum "sobre santos y pecadores, sobre el bien y el mal". ¿Estás de acuerdo?

Bueno, de algún modo toda la música que he hecho a lo largo de mi carrera entraría en esa categoría. Incluyendo Saturnalia.

En "Winter Song", de los Screaming Trees, cantabas "Jesús está golpeando mi puerta". Y la expresión bíblica "Until Kingdom Come" aparece tanto en Bubblegum como en Ballad of the Broken Seas, el primero de los discos que grabaste con (la cantante de Belle & Sebastian) Isobel Campbell. ¿Te considerás una persona religiosa?

Leí muchos libros, pero la Biblia no. (se ríe) Hay muchas experiencias que no viví personalmente, pero que igual aparecen en mis canciones. No me considero una persona religiosa. Con suerte, soy una persona espiritual.


A lo largo de tu carrera trabajaste con gente muy distinta, de Cobain al grupo electropop inglés Soulsavers, pasando por Campbell y los Queens of the Stone Age. ¿Tenés que hacer una especie de "switch" mental" como colaborador, para pasar de un proyecto al siguiente?

Fui bendecido por la oportunidad de colaborar con gente muy distinta. Y es algo que, definitivamente, disfruto mucho. Afortunadamente, en cada uno de los casos sentí que estaba capacitado para hacerlo. Es lo que hago, pero no sé si considerarme un "colaborador". Cada situación involucra un punto de vista diferente. Y, hasta ahora, creo que he funcionado correctamente en los distintos planos en los que me tocó participar.

Además de grabar con QOTSA, se llegó a especular con que podías convertirte en su cantante fijo. ¿Lo pensaste seriamente?

No. Me involucré en algunos de sus discos, hice un montón de shows con ellos y la pasé muy bien. Amé a la banda, a los chicos y a la música. Pero fue lo que fue.

En Bubblegum participan Josh Homme y Nick Olivieri de QOTSA, PJ Harvey, Dulli, Izzy Stradlin y Duff McKagan de los Guns N' Roses. ¿Cómo hiciste para juntarlos a todos en un disco?

En mis discos lo que hago es invitar a mis amigos para que vengan a tocar. Y la gente que estaba alrededor mío en la época en la que estaba haciendo Bubblegum eran ellos. Nada más.

¿Qué lado tuyo pudiste explorar al trabajar con Isobel Campbell?

Hay mucha dulzura en su música. Y disfruté mucho al poder compartirla con ella. Es la misma razón por la que estamos tratando de hacer un concierto acústico con Greg: porque para mí es un desafío hacer cosas desde el punto de vista de la otra persona. Quizás no lo haría si fuera por mi propia iniciativa. Quiero decir, no cantaría una canción escrita desde la perspectiva de una mujer. Y hay algo realmente dulce en poder hacerlo. Puede parecer naive, pero me resultan experiencias satisfactorias.

Soulsavers Broken Press Release, 2009
In 2007, when Soulsavers released their second opus “It’s Not How Far You Fall, It’s How You Land”, the collective’s leader Rich Machin explained what lay behind it. “I didn't want to be in an electronic band. Or a rock'n'roll band. I wanted the freedom to explore.

Today, he reaffirms that position. “I love all kinds of music, which allows me to open all these doors. There’s nothing better than bringing in great people who inspire, to keep you on top of your game, and to keep things fresh and never boring. That's the nature of what we've set up here."

Soulsavers had begun as more of an electronic affair, with Machin partnering studio engineer Ian Glover for the 2003 debut Tough Guys Don’t Dance. Josh Haden of slow-core moodists Spain (the band, not the country), added three vocals, but the following It’s Not How Far You Fall... set a new benchmark, threading soul, gospel, rock, jazz, country into the mix and a matching spread of singers. Principally, though, out front was the indefatigable Mark Lanegan, former Screaming Tree whose profound, growling croon was the perfect match for Soulsavers’ broader, richer vein of sepulchral cinerama.

Besides Lanegan’s eight vocals, there were telling contributions from The London Community Gospel Choir, Will Oldham and Doves' Jimi Goodwin; voices to throw light and shade on Machin’s expansive music and to contrast Lanegan’s tobacco-tarred laments.

The album went down an absolute storm: “An album of such devotional beauty that even on first listen it creates an abundantly transcendent experience,” went one review. “One listen to their spine-tingling second effort will have you ready to up sticks and follow them to the ends of the earth,” read another.

Now you must be prepared to follow Soulsavers even further, for Broken is even better, a future classic that delivers 14 tracks of wide-ranging majesty. The main difference this time, says Rich, is the influence of Soulsavers’ stage incarnation. “Touring has definitely brought the guitars to the front of Broken and it’s got a more soulful twist too. And though it’s clearly has some very dark overtones, I don’t think it’s quite as dark as the last.”

True, though Lanegan – who reigns over ten tracks here – still sounds like the weight of the world sits on his shoulders. But the story this time begins with another voice. ‘Sunrise’, which is being released exclusively as a 7” single (and download) before Broken, is a west coast-drenched, lone-plains-drifter lament sung by Will Oldham, with Lanegan supplying lyrics and music. Returning the favour, Lanegan takes on Oldham’s ‘You Will Miss Me When I Burn’; it’s the B-side to ‘Sunrise’ and an album cut.

Like its predecessor, Broken was recorded in Los Angeles, in the wee small hours. It took about a year to finish, Rich and Mark bouncing ideas off each other, and back and forth between LA and Rich’s base in the north of England, until it was time to sign off on the record. Not that Rich interfered with the wordsmith. “Mark’s lyrics are so good, you don’t want to wade in there and ask for changes,” he says. Regarding any lyrical theme, though Rich recently told one journalist, “it started as a concept record, but we forgot what the concept we started with was,” he now admits is was a flippant comment, and there was never such a thing. “Mark and I have never got into any kind of conversation about lyrics. His lyrics speak for themselves, and anyway, one thing he’s never going to do is shed some light on anything!”

Perhaps Broken is a little lighter than the last because of its circumstances. It’s Not How Far You Fall... was funded off Rich’s credit cards, without a record deal in place. “During the mix, you realise what a dumb thing you might have done, so it became quite stressful,” he recalls. “It was a huge undertaking. But V2 came in and bailed us out.” Now Soulsavers has a full support network, from V2 to loyal press and fans alike.

Not only have Soulsavers has a full support network, from label to loyal press and fans alike, but they can count on fans who themselves pursue dark-eyed rock hues. Like Spiritualized’s Jason Pierce, who duets with Lanegan on ‘Pharaoh’s Chariot’, which came about after both bands toured together in 2008. That most left-field of mainstream rollers, Mike Patton duets with Mark on ‘Unbalanced Pieces’, Broken’s most electronic-enhanced cut, while Richard Hawley adds shadowy backing vocals to ‘Shadows Fall’, and finally Gibby Haynes of Butthole Surfers infamy appears alongside Lanegan on Death Bells. In the studio the band added Martyn LeNoble (Porno For Pyros + Jane’s Addiction) on bass duties.

Broken also introduces a new voice, Red Ghost (Rosa Agostino). Her suitably dark, sultry tones unfurl across three standout tracks - the stately ‘By My Side’, the glowering ‘Praying Ground’ and the sensual, jazz-blues of ‘Rolling Skies’, on which she trades verses with Mark over a steamy, New Orleans-tinted groove. “This young Australian girl from Sydney kept on sending me demos,” Rich recalls, “and she was better than most everything else we’d heard. We traded ideas, and it really gelled.”

Yet Lanegan remains at the album’s core, for which Rich is eternally grateful. “When you hear him throw a vocal down, it’s incredibly inspiring and pushes you to raise your game even further. He really brings out the best in you.” Rich, for his part, sounds at the top of his game too. ‘Shadows Fall’, ‘Pharaoh’s Chariot’ and ‘All The Way Down’ have a rich, gospel undertow. ‘Death Bells’ malevolently rocks the hardest, while ‘You Will Miss Me When I Burn’, ‘Highway Kind’ and ‘Can’t Catch The Train’ showcases Soulsavers’ becalmed, solitary side. And then there is the album’s stunning, eight-minute version of ‘Some Misunderstanding’, written by original Byrd and fallen angel Gene Clark for his epochal 1974 album No Other, which Lanegan sings with bruising conviction - and don’t forget the superlative guitar coda, which Neil Young would surely have been proud of nailing. “I grew up listening to lots of that music,” says Rich. “I was always a big Neil Young fan, for example. It’s pretty inspiring to get up into Laurel Canyon and around those parts, particularly when you’re making a record yourself.”

Finally, Rich contributes two instrumentals, which bare his soundtrack soul. Soulsavers songs have unsurprisingly been used for US TV dramas, from Grey’s Anatomy & CSI New York through to HBO’s new smash hit InTreatment, but Rich – a huge film buff – has his eyes on the bigger screen. Brilliant ‘auditions’ both, ‘The Seventh Proof’ and ‘Wise Blood’ are gloriously moody in the Morricone/Nicolai (both formative influences of Rich’s) Italian school of killer orchestrations. To help him, he called on a contemporary Italian arranger Daniele Luppi, "He brought alive our ideas, which has pushed me harder to try and work a lot more in that film world.”

What of the future? Rich is committed to keeping things fresh, “but Mark and I have got this thing, and we’ll always work together one way or another.” It seems that, for the time being, they’ve saved each other souls, and now they’re out to save yours... "

Glover was not there, and will not be touring with the band.


AL: How do you write the music when you and Rich are working together?

Mark: Rich and Ian generate the music. They send it to me. I listen to it.

AL: So the music is mostly done already?

Rich: I usually come up with basic ideas, and pass them on to Mark. Then
the decisions that Mark makes dictate the direction the tracks continue in
musically. It’s almost like a three stage process. There are the initial basic
loops of music. Mark will put his vocals to them. The third stage will be
completing the track.

AL: Is this how you like to work on music?

Mark: I would say the results are different for me. My part of the process
is, even if I am writing the song myself, and I have a guitar in my hand,
there is always a beginning, and working through it, till the end. If someone
else is doing the music, and I am adding vocals, my part is essentially the
same. The difference here is someone else is doing the music. This music
that Rich makes, and I am part of, is a unique experience.

AL: How do you usually write songs yourself?

Mark: When I am writing the music? I usually have a guitar in my hand.
Usually the lyrics come to me. I will make a sound with my voice. The sound will
tell me what the word is supposed to be. That word will tell me, what the
rest of them will be, if that makes any sense? If someone else wrote the
music: I am initially listening to the music and making sounds, in my head or
out loud. It’s the same thing.

AL: You are just making sound effects?

Mark: Oftentimes there is an odd word here and there. Maybe those words
don’t make it to the finished lyric. It’s not brain surgery. You are just
mapping things out and filling in the blanks.

AL: Then with Greg Dulli, you are writing together? How does that work?

Mark: Yeah. When I am writing lyrics with someone else it is a bit
different. It’s like high comedy. One of us will have a guitar. We will just make
each other laugh.

AL: Since there are two of you, you would be more critical. Point out a
line that is stupid.

Mark: Yeah, but I wouldn’t say it like that. You have to have a certain
amount of trust to write together. It hasn’t happened much in Soulsavers. If
Rich came up to me and said “That line is not working for me” I would have to
be thick-skinned enough to take it into consideration. And try something
else. If you are writing the words together, you have to be pretty good
friends.

AL: Sometimes people would want to collaborate with someone like yourself
or Greg Dulli, and when they collaborate, they see how this specific person
writes a song. That is how they do it! They are seeing how another person
approaches writing a song.

Mark: Are you saying that they are not going to be critical if they want
you?

AL: (laughter) No. I think they are inspired by the collaboration, and they
have first hand knowledge of those processes.

Rich: There is nothing better than finding someone that you respect.
Plugging into their mind to find out how they work. Sucking that dry, and steal
everything you can from them. It always feels good to drain someone
creatively.

AL: Do you feel that other people have sucked Mark Lanegan dry?

Mark: I have sucked myself dry.

Rich: It’s good. The more people you work with, the better it is for
everyone. It’s usually a very positive experience. It’s very rare that someone
who I hugely respect turns in something that sucks.

AL: Some bands today seem like they are referencing a few albums, and
adding a twist. They are saying that here are the four or five records that I
like, and here you go. What do you think of that?

Rich: It’s how I start off all music. I figure what I am going to rip off.
I take it from there. I have always been influenced by great music. That is
what music is: getting off on other music, and motivating yourself to do
something else.

AL: There are some bands that made some weird sound. That original noise
sounds different and original. That is the sound of that band. Don’t you think
the spirit of trying to do something original is still valid?

Rich: Of course.

Mark: Everyone that I know that does music started out because they were
fans of music.

AL: But maybe on your first album you were heavily influenced?

Mark: Sure. On the 50th one you don’t give a damn anymore.

Rich: There is a difference between being influenced and being, as you say,
a tribute act. There is more money to be made being a good tribute act. You
should just go for that, straight off the bat.

Mark: I think David Bowie said this. He said, “I don’t think I have
written a lot of good songs, but I have found a lot of them.” I think he said
that. The trick is if you are going to borrow from places, just make it your
own.

AL: On the new album, there is a lot of this bad ass guitar sounds. It’s
like, hey, what’s up with this, and how did these English guys pull this off?

Rich: What the fuck are these guys up to?

AL: It’s like a Guns and Roses thing?

Rich: You are the first person who said that it sounds like Guns and Roses.
I end up getting into a lot of music conversations. I really enjoy talking
about other people’s music. When you make music, people have a pre-conceived
idea what you must be into. Some of my favorite bands that I have always
liked are boogie bands like AC/DC, ZZ Top, and the Rolling Stones. I love
those bands. People look at me, and go “I wouldn’t think you would be into
that shit.” Those three bands are in my top ten across the board easily.

Mark: When you are making records, sometimes you want to give everything
you have musically. Crank the guitar up.

AL: Who played all those bad ass guitar licks on the record?

Rich: There are a couple of guitar players on there. The stuff that you are
referencing is Rich Warren. He played most of the really inspired guitar
playing. He is an awesome guitar player. He is one of the best that I have
ever seen. He was in fine form.

AL: How did you get Gibby Haynes, Richard Hawley, or Jason Pierce to play
with you?

Rich: They are friends. It is great to call up friends and have them come
in. It’s a great pleasure and a compliment that they would say “yes” as
well.

Mark: It’s great to work with people who you like their tunes, and having
there in the context of your music. It’s one of those whims to indulge.

AL: How many records have you done now?

Mark: Too many. But there are a shitload of people who I haven’t played
with, who I would like to.

AL: Who are some those people?

Mark: Jimmy Page. (laughter)

AL: Let’s make the call right now.

Mark: Joe Perry. Joe Perry has been having problems with his knee.

AL: So you are on vocals, with Jimmy Page and Joe Perry on guitars. Who
else is in this band?

Rich: Fucking Billy Gibbons. I am already envious of Mark, because he has
already done something with Billy Gibbons.

AL: How do you know when someone is not interested?

Mark: The people who are not interested just don’t get back to you. Have
you heard anything? That happens. You would be surprised.

AL: What happened with Isobel Campbell? There was a tour, and then you
canceled it. What happened there?

Mark: I was working on Soulsavers at that time. We were supposed to do a
tour in Spring 2009, but they had visa issues. She changed management. So that
didn’t happen. I have finished another record with her in the meantime.

AL: A third one?

Mark: Yeah. That will come out sometime soon. They just haven’t made it
over here yet.

AL: So you have been working on some band or project for over twenty years?
Did you ever take a break?

Mark: There was some time off in 1996.

AL: You are not the vacationing type?

Mark: I just had four months off this year. I get recharged very easily.
Motivation is paying the bills.

AL: So when does the tour start?

Rich: We are going back to England. We are playing a few shows and a few
festivals in August 2009. We are playing Reading and Leeds. Then we come to
the US in September.

AL: How many people are in the band?

Rich: Six. It’s stripped back for us. Times are hard.

AL: You will play the new album. Any old songs?

Rich: About half and half. We will throw some new things to keep things
interesting. Touring is like out of my comfort zone. I like being in the
studio. It’s a gradual thing.
