Manchester City can argue with some justification about the damage wrought on their players’ psyche by the ambush on their bus en route to the ground. They can lament the officials’ failure to spot that Mohamed Salah was offside in the build-up to Liverpool’s first goal, and that Raheem Sterling should have had a penalty when fouled by Andrew Robertson. But they also have to accept that they were deservedly thrashed by a hungrier, sharper Liverpool side.
What City cannot dispute is that their manager, Pep Guardiola, made a horrendous tactical error in starting Ilkay Gündogan, who was patently overwhelmed by the occasion and resembled a feather in a wind machine when the Liverpool hurricane of noise, pressing and counterattacking swept through City.
Picking Gündogan in a 4-2-3-1 system, and leaving the in-form Sterling on the bench until sanity prevailed was almost an act of timidity by Guardiola, certainly an act of folly. Sterling gave City an outlet when he finally arrived. Guardiola’s team sheet signalled caution, a contrast to Jürgen Klopp, who was boldness personified and utterly outwitted his illustrious counterpart.
Guardiola’s game plan appeared focused on trying to isolate Klopp’s teenage right back, Trent Alexander-Arnold, with long switches from Kyle Walker and Kevin De Bruyne, hoping to release Leroy Sané. Alexander-Arnold stood up to the challenge, and he not only lived with Sané, showing him inside into traffic, especially in the second half, but the 19-year-old embodied Klopp’s forward-looking philosophy. Alexander-Arnold was supposed to be the weak link, yet he stood tall throughout, dealt with Sané and even attacked, and there will be smiles and pride in the club’s academy today.
Over on the other flank, Andrew Robertson was looking an utter bargain at £8 million as he defended adeptly, barring a couple of wobbles against Sterling, and attacked hungrily, embarking on one rampaging run that Fernandinho needed all his athleticism to see off. That did not thwart Robertson, who simply attacked again
All over the pitch, Klopp’s players were eclipsing their City counterparts. James Milner was last seen on his new Twitter feed, checking the length of mini-eggs with a ruler, and he certainly had the measure of City. He harassed them in midfield, had an assist, and was outstanding. To think City let him go on a free.
A penny, too, for the thoughts of the watching Gareth Southgate. Milner is happily retired from the England scene but at 32 is still in great physical condition. Alongside him was Jordan Henderson, shielding Liverpool’s back four with such adroitness that the booking (for a foul on Sterling) that rules him out of next week’s second leg was greeted with sighs. Liverpool will hope Emre Can regains fitness.
This was Henderson’s sort of night, working overtime, pressing relentlessly, and supplying the ball to the artists. This was also the sort of night that showed why Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain left Arsenal, and he has rarely played better. His energy, pressing and rapid counterattacking, added to his goal threat, make him a formidable presence in Liverpool’s midfield.
What City also cannot debate is that there is an Anfield effect. The scenes outside the ground shamed Liverpool, who apologised, but the scenes inside, and especially the ear-splitting noise screamed of local desire. The Etihad, barring some occasions, is flat in comparison. Most stadiums are. Anfield is special, and it is the residents that make it so. The Kop’s pride in their team runs so deep and is voiced so fervently.
It inhibited visitors such as Gündogan but particularly inspired their own players. City ran into a swarm of red as well as a wall of noise. Some City fans sang about Liverpool “living in the past”, following an emotional build-up inside the stadium filled with songs and banners, but the astonishing first 31 minutes of football signalled that Liverpool’s fearless approach was very much the future.
And so began Liverpool’s lightning raids. When Sané lost possession, Milner drilled the ball down the right, and Salah had anticipated the possibilities, and was off and running, probably precipitously but eluding the assistant referee and Aymeric Laporte — who’d have guessed? — and then Kyle Walker before sliding the ball forward to Roberto Firmino.
With Nicolás Otamendi abject and soon prostrate in trying to deal with Firmino, the Brazilian’s shot was saved by Ederson, but Walker failed to clear, and the ball fell to Salah, who took a touch before propelling it between the diving Ederson and a despairing Vincent Kompany on the line.
Liverpool sensed blood. Milner was far too strong in the tackle for Gündogan, and the ball was soon at the feet of Oxlade-Chamberlain. With Sané bizarrely not getting involved and Kompany too slow to react, Oxlade-Chamberlain did not hesitate and thundered the ball into the net before Ederson could react. Sané is a fine player but he can’t stop like that and allow Oxlade-Chamberlain a split-second. Guardiola turned away, closing his eyes, and throwing out his hands in disbelief, looking almost contemptuous at the concession of such a goal.
City’s defence was a shambles. Laporte, a good centre back but struggling out of position at left back, was not alone in his private ordeal. Walker was troubled by Robertson and Mané. Kompany and Otamendi looked like strangers in the night, lacking understanding and so sluggish in dealing with danger. They looked old.
City lacked Liverpool’s hunger until the second half. Firmino set the scene for the third, pressing the opposition with classic Klopp-approved vigour in midfield, and then Salah took up the running. It was all about momentum and even when Salah’s first cross was blocked, he swiftly regained the ball and lifted it towards the far post, cutting out Kompany. Again City’s defence was chaos on legs with only Fernandinho and Walker back defending against Firmino, Mané and Milner. Mané was sharpest, heading unerringly past Ederson, who did not stand a chance.
The second half saw a different Liverpool, changing the buccaneering for the battling. They defended so expertly. Liverpool’s attacking inclinations were reduced when Salah limped away, and was replaced by Georginio Wijnaldum, who stepped into midfield with Oxlade-Chamberlain moving to the right.
Sterling’s arrival increased the decibel level, if that were possible. He appealed for a penalty when challenged by Robertson but the German officials ignored his pleas as the Kop laughed itself senseless. The tie is not over, but it is hard not to see Liverpool scoring at the Etihad, and would mean City needing five.

He appealed for a penalty when challenged by Robertson but the German officials ignored his pleas as the Kop laughed itself senseless. The tie is not over, but it is hard not to see Liverpool scoring at the Etihad, and would mean City needing five.
What a brick
